About the event
Originating in Virginia and spreading throughout the United States, the
Mission of Mercy (MOM) dental programs have provided more than 100,000 patients
with more than $50 million of free dental services since 2000. The first MOM dental
clinic in Maryland was held in Western Maryland in 2010. Since that time, there
have been similar large clinics held every year (pre-COVID) throughout the state. These events
have been made possible through a community partnership with individuals, a
variety of organizations and businesses, including the Maryland State Dental
Association (MSDA), Maryland State Dental Association Education and Charitable
Foundation (MSDAF), the local component dental societies, and many clinical and
non-clinical volunteers. The clinics originally were two day events held in a large
venue including approximately 100 portable dental treatment chairs with 800 to 1000
plus patients being treated. A variety of dental treatments were provided, including
extractions, restorations, gross debridement and limited root canals, crowns, and
interim partial dentures. These services varied depending on the event location and
the patient’s needs.
Despite the advancements over the years in Maryland to provide oral health care to
our most vulnerable populations, through programs including the MOM dental
clinics, there is still room to improve and serve the thousands of Marylanders who go
without dental care and have poor oral health. If dental disease is not addressed,
this can have a detrimental effect on one’s overall health and may compromise the
ability to lead a healthy life.
Since the arrival of COVID-19 in the United States in March 2020 and the
subsequent related infection control concerns, it has been determined that at this
time the large clinic model is not a safe environment to treat this underserved
population. Therefore, we have developed a model to treat these patients in a
smaller, more traditional dental setting. We refer to these events as Mini-MOM Dental Clinics.
